Middle Shabelle deputy governor, several others killed in IED attack

MOGADISHU (HOL) – Several senior officials among them Middle Shabelle deputy governor Abdullahi Shitaawe were killed in a landmine blast at Gololey locality near Bal’ad town.

Sources in the area confirmed to HOL that Shitaawe and several other officials including former HirShabelle trade minister Sabriye Osman died on the spot when the vehicle they were travelling hit an explosive improvised device (IED) suspected to have been planted on the road.
Several other people sustained injuries in the deadly blast which occurred when the convoy was travelling along Jowhar-Bala’d highway.

No group has claimed responsibility but the militant group Al-Shabaab has conducted such attacks in the past.
